The convention centre, $610 million design and build contract one of the state’s biggest, which will have six storeys plus a basement, will be about 250 meters long and 110 meters wide. Of the total construction area of 150,000 square meters, some 60,000 square meters will be made of reinforced concrete and 90,000 square meters from structural steel. The centre’s conceptual designs were prepared byJapanese architect Arata Isozaki.
The Qatar National Convention Centre, opening in 2011, is located in Doha’s Education City, a hub for education, science and research. Home to some of the world’s leading universities including Weill Cornell, Texas A&M, Virginia Commonwealth, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Northwestern and several research institutions.
Boasting a 2,500-seat auditorium, a 500-seat theatre, two tiered auditoria with capacity for 300-472 delegates each and a 4,000-seat multi-purpose hall for conferences, seating for 4,000 delegates banquet style. In addition, 40,000sqm of exhibition space divisible into 9 Halls capable of seating 10,000 for a theatre or banquet style to meet the demands of global conference and exhibition organisers.
The stunning architectural design is centered around a steel replica of the Sidra tree. Traditionally, the Sidra tree was a retreat for poets and scholars, who gathered beneath its branches to discuss and impart knowledge. A beloved icon in Qatari history and culture, the Sidra tree is an apt symbol for Qatar Foundation and for the Qatar National Convention Centre.
